Ghetto Film School is a speculative proposal for a new Los Angeles campus located in MacArthur Park, conceived as an architectural extension of the filmmaking process itself. Rather than organizing the program within a singular institutional building, the campus is imagined as a collection of interconnected spaces centered around a communal courtyard, encouraging exploration, interaction, and creative exchange.

Drawing inspiration from Michael Maltzan's design for Inner-City Arts in Downtown Los Angeles, the project embraces an open-air campus model where movement between programs becomes an integral part of the educational experience. Studios, theaters, sound stages, administrative spaces, library facilities, and public gathering areas are distributed across the site, creating a dynamic environment that promotes collaboration and community.

As a youth-focused film program, the design seeks to capture the energy, ambition, and imagination of emerging filmmakers. Architectural forms draw from the visual language of cinema, science fiction, and the larger mythology of Hollywood, creating a bold and expressive identity that reflects the creative aspirations of its students. Dramatic cantilevers, layered volumes, and cinematic spatial sequences transform the campus into an immersive experience that encourages discovery and inspiration.

At the heart of the project is a central courtyard that acts as the social and organizational core of the campus. Beneath it, a semi-outdoor screening venue doubles as an event space for film premieres, performances, lectures, and community gatherings. Two stacked theaters provide dedicated spaces for screenings and presentations, while sound stages and production facilities support hands-on filmmaking education.

The result is a campus designed not only to teach filmmaking, but to embody it—an environment where architecture becomes a catalyst for creativity, collaboration, and storytelling while establishing a memorable civic presence within the city.
